Suspect charged in slaying in Sarasota

April 14, 2014

SARASOTA -- A 38-year-old man has been charged with murder in the death of another man Monday, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

At 4:25 p.m., the suspect, Ed Rutherford, called a woman to tell her he had found her husband, David Alessandrini, dead at their home in the 2100 block of Oak Terrace in Sarasota.

"The woman, who was parked just up the street when she received the call, saw Rutherford speed away from the house," a news release Tuesday states.

Responding deputies found the door to the home locked, but there also were signs of forced entry. During a search of the home, they found Alessandrini dead of "homicidal trauma."

Detectives issued a bulletin to locate Rutherford.

Not long afterwards, police at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport reported they had had contact with Rutherford when he went to the airport to pick up relatives.

Deputies found Rutherford at his parents' home and arrested him.

He is being held without bond at the Sarasota County jail.
