Sleepy Palmetto 14-year-old driver reportedly causes accident that injures 5

MANATEE -- The Florida Highway Patrol ticketed a 14-year-old driver who apparently fell asleep and caused a two-car accident at 6:15 p.m. Sunday at County Road 675 east of 136th Terrace East in Manatee County.

The FHP reported a 2004 Ford F-250 driven by a 14-year-old Palmetto boy was westbound on CR 675 approaching 136th Terrace E. when a 2002 Nissan Altima eastbound on CR 675 was passing 136th Terrace E.

FHP reportsthe 14-year-old driver apparently fell asleep and drove off the roadway to the north, crossed over south into the eastbound lanes and continued south off the roadway on the south side crossing into the path of the Altima.

The left side of the truck reportedly struck the front of the Altima and then hit a guardrail. The Altima came to final rest in the eastbound lane, facing east.

The teen truck driver reportedly sustained minor injuries as did a 9-year-old male passenger from Palmetto and a 38-year-old passenger from Palmetto.

The 16-year-old driver from Parrish of the Altima was taken to Blake Medical Center with serious injuries. A 15-year-old passenger from Parrish also sustained minor injuries as did a 4-year-old passenger from Parrish.

The FHP issued citations for careless driving, driving with no drivers license and permitting an unauthorized minor under 18 to drive. Who the citations were issued to was not reported.
