A drunk driver struck a Sarasota police officer while fleeing the scene of an accident, authorities said Friday.

The incident happened just before 9 p.m. at the Sarasota Yacht Club, 1100 John Ringling Blvd., where two officers were working an off duty detail, according to police spokesperson Genevieve Judge.

"A woman ran to officers telling them that she was just hit (grazed) by a vehicle," Judge wrote in an email. "One of the officers attempted to stop the vehicle in question and the driver accelerated, hitting the officer and throwing them onto the hood of the car."

The officer was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Judge said.

Arrested was Baltasar Jimenez, who was charged with DUI, DUI with personal injury and DUI with property damage, all misdemeanors, Judge said. He was taken to Sarasota County Jail.

No further information was immediately available.
