SARASOTA -- A four-time convicted felon is facing new weapons charges after his arrest in Sarasota, according to Sarasota police.

Officers on Saturday afternoon stopped William S. Griffin, 47, at 12th Street and Huntington Place.

"When officers checked his information, it showed he had a suspended driver’s license with knowledge from a prior court order," a news release states. "Investigation information also revealed he was a high risk sexual offender and on inmate release for the sale of cocaine."

During a search of his car, officers found a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol under the driver's seat where Griffin had been sitting, police said.

Griffin was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and driving with a suspended license. He was being held at the Sarasota County jail on bonds totaling $72,000, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office website.
