League hosts session today on improving voter turnout
BRADENTON -- In light of the upcoming election, voting rights and ways to increase voter turnout will be the focus of the League of Women Voters of Manatee County Hot Topic program 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.
Guest speaker Carolyn Gray, representing the League of Women Voters of Florida, will discuss the law and the relevant court decision. Manatee County Supervisor of Elections Mike Bennett will discuss recent polling place consolidations, along with the expansion of early voting and growth of the use of absentee ballots to enhance turnout.
The program will be at the Bradenton Woman's Club, 1705 Manatee Ave. W. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. for a light lunch, and talk begins at noon.

Grand opening of Neal Preserve slated
MANATEE -- The grand opening of on Pat & Charlene Neal Preserve, 12301 Manatee Ave. W., is set for 4-6 p.m. April 9. Planned are a ribbon cutting, Native American tool and activity demonstrations and naturalist-led guided tours.
Democratic Women to host scholarship luncheon
BRADENTON -- Democratic Women's Club of Manatee will hold their annual scholarship luncheon 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Renaissance on 9th, 1816 Ninth St. W. Sheriff's Maj. Connie Shingledecker will be guest speaker.

Sheriff Steube to address East Manatee GOP
PERIDIA -- The East Manatee Republican Club will meet 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Peridia Golf and Country Club, 4950 Peridia Blvd., for lunch. Cost of the lunch is $16.
Guest speaker will be Sheriff Brad Steube. Steube will discuss Manatee crime statistics and offer a critique of the Marijuana "Constitutional Amendment" that will appear on the November ballot. A question and answer session will follow.

Island Democrats to take up Ukraine-Russia conflict
BRADENTON -- The Anna Maria Island Democratic Club will meet for lunch at the Mannatees Sports Grill, 7423 Manatee Ave. W., 11:45 a.m. April 21.
Guest speaker Sasha Taurke, who grew up in Kiev, holds advanced degrees in comparative government from University of California in Berkeley and Fordham University, will be the guest speaker.
He was a career American military intelligence officer, who also served in the State Department, and was senior fellow in the Institute for Strategic Studies at the National Defense University. His topic will be the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
