Juco baseball: SCF comeback falls short

MANATEE -- The State College of Florida baseball team cut an early 7-0 deficit to one but fell short 7-6 Saturday against Polk State College at Robert C. Wynn Field.

Cory Reid and Alex Pinero homered for the Manatees (22-14, 8-9 Suncoast Conference). Scott Williams had two hits and drove in two runs.

Prep baseball: Inspiration Academy rolls

ST. PETERSBURG -- Inspiration Academy got a strong effort on the hill from Jacob Heiser and Joey Ambrosini, paving the way to a 14-1 road victory over St. Petersburg Admiral Farragut (2-13).

Heiser earned the win, lasting three innings and striking out three, only allowing one hit and an unearned run. Ambrosini cleaned up, also allowing one hit and striking out three in two innings.

Abrosini added three RBIs for the Lions (16-4). Payton Jenkins added three RBIs.

Boxing: Sarasota Boxing Club fighter wins

CRYSTAL RIVER -- Sarasota Boxing Club fighter Da'magion VanHouter, 9, won a walkover to claim the 80-pound weight division title at the Florida Junior Olympic Championships. VanHouter ran his record to 3-1.

Tennis: Petkovic, Cepelova move to final

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- No matter how the final match goes, there will be a surprise champion at the Family Circle Cup.

No. 14 seed Andrea Petkovic of Germany and Jana Cepelova of Slovakia advanced to the finals, both rallying late in their matches. Petkovic defeated sixth-seeded Eugenie Bouchard 1-6, 6-3, 7-5, while Cepelova came back from 4-1 down in a third-set tiebreaker to oust qualifier Belinda Bencic 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7).

MLS: Bradley leads Toronto FC past Crew

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Michael Bradley's goal in the 11th minute was enough for Toronto FC to end the Columbus Crew's unbeaten run with a 2-0 victory.

ELSEWHERE -- Clint Dempsey scored a hat trick, including two goals in the final five minutes of the match and the Seattle Sounders staged a furious late rally to pull out a 4-4 draw with the rival Portland timbers on Saturday. ... Juan Luis Anangono headed in the tying goal from a difficult angle in the 86th minute and the Chicago Fire earned their fourth straight draw in a 2-2 tie with the visiting Philadelphia Union.

Horse racing: Calif. Chrome wins Santa Anita

ARCADIA, Calif. -- California Chrome romped to a 5 -length victory in the $1 million Santa Anita Derby, stamping him as a strong favorite heading into next month's Kentucky Derby.

ELSEWHERE -- Room Service and Rosalind dueled to an exciting dead-heat finish in the $500,000 Central Bank Ashland at Keeneland and earn big points toward the Kentucky Oaks in Lexington, Ky.
