Bradenton brewery grows community partnership with Village of the Arts

BRADENTON -- When models at the Bradenton Motorworks Brewery are asked to walk a straight line, it won't be because they sampled too many of the brewery's goods.

Instead, they will walk a straight line down a makeshift runway for the 13th annual Village of the Arts fashion show, a fundraiser to benefit the Artists Guild of Manatee. This year's event will take place at the brewery, 1014 Ninth St. W., beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 19, and lasting until around 12:45 p.m.

"It's a fashion show that highlights the products you can find in the village," said co-organizer and artist/owner of Heart's Desire, Vicki Rollo. "It will feature clothes, jewelry, accessories and all the things that reflect the gorgeous things you can find in the village."

Rollo said it's the village's largest fundraiser of the year for the guild, which has taken up a permanent home within the village as the community continues to transform itself into an artist's and art lover's destination.

This is the first village event that is being held at Motorworks, but it won't be the last in what is developing into a unique partnership.

"As a company, we want to work with the village in any way we can," said Kristin Martin, Motorworks' social media director. "We plan on partnering with them to do art fairs on Saturdays and work with Retro Cakes cupcakes in the village to pair their cupcakes with some of our beer flavors."

Denise Tschida, president and cofounder of Motorworks, took it one step down the runway further. She said the growing partnership with the village is no accident.

"Knowing this unique community was here was one of the primary reasons we wanted to locate here," said Tschida. "We wanted to tie in with them before we even closed on this building. My husband is an artist and a designer, so we have a real affection for the village."

Rollo said talks about how the village and Motorworks could work together in helping the overall community redevelopment vision for the 14th Street West CRA district, which includes the village, "began before they ever broke ground. We've all been very involved with the CRA development process and have attended the creative focus group meetings, so we have been talking about working together for a long time."

Motorworks considers itself to be the gateway to the village, and villagers aren't disputing it. In fact, they have largely praised Motorworks for what it has done for the village in increasing foot-traffic business and, of course, a making a vital enhancement to a building and property that sat vacant for many years.

Tschida said Motorworks has only been open for 60 days, and interior upstairs construction is ongoing, as well as expansion to the brewing area. It currently only has a handful of beer flavors on tap compared to a goal of producing 60 different flavors. But it is already a popular destination for beer lovers and others.

"We are very happy to be able to host this fashion show for the village, and believe me, that there are a lot more exciting things coming up," said Tschida. "We will be teaming up on a lot more things."

Rollo said chefs from village restaurants will be providing the food, and Martin said Motorworks will be open for business for fashion show attendees.

"Seating will be limited," said Rollo, who noted reservations are required to attend.
