MANATEE -- Detectives are investigating the death of an inmate found hanging by a sheet at the Manatee County jail, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Mario Gorrin-Capote, 36, was found hanging from the top of a door in a visitation room at the jail at 4:15 p.m. Thursday.

"A sheet was tied around his neck," a news release states. "Deputies and medical staff began life saving measures on Gorrin-Capote but were unsuccessful."

The sheriff's office said "all evidence is consistent with a suicide."

Sheriff's office spokesman Dave Bristow said after guards found Gorrin-Capote, they called for paramedics.

“It looked like this was planned,” Bristow said. “He had hid a sheet and took it in there with him.”

Visitation rooms are private at the Manatee County jail, and inmates speak to their visitors through a video conference.

“He was not in the midst of a visitation,” Bristow said.

It appears to have happened just before the visitation was scheduled to occur.

Gorrin-Capote had been in jail since Monday, when he was booked in on charges of grand theft and racketeering. He was being held on bonds totaling $306,500.
