BRADENTON -- Police arrested a gang member after he was spotted driving without a driver's license, according to the Bradenton Police Department.

Kenye D. Cooper, who police said is a known and active criminal, was spotted driving at 7:36 p.m. Tuesday by the Casual Clothes Unit, according to a police report. Officers knew that his license had been revoked.

When Cooper saw police, he turned into the Bradenton Village Apartments complex as he reportedly tried to conceal himself.

Cooper was located walking down a sidewalk 50 yards from where his car was seen turning, the report said.

Police reportedly then learned from witnesses that Cooper had crashed into a fence when he entered the lot and left the scene of the crash.

Additionally, police learned that Cooper was on home detention and should not have been out. Contact was made with his probation officer to confirm the violation.

Cooper was arrested and charged with one felony count of driving with a license revoked, leaving the scene of an accident, violation of probation and failure to have motor vehicle insurance.

Cooper was being held without bond at the Manatee County jail.
