Tigers blank Riverviewin baseball
Hunter Leonard pitched a 2-hitter and ripped a two-run double to lead the Palmetto baseball team to a 4-0 victory over visiting Riverview on Tuesday.
Jared Taylor led the Tigers (11-9) by going 3-for-3 with an RBI.
BRADEN RIVER 11, SOUTHEAST 2 -- Brock Younce allowed no runs over five innings, and three different Pirates collected three hits apiece as visiting Braden River (10-9) defeated the Seminoles.
Younce struck out four and and allowed six hits to get the win. Brian Dillingham, Tyler Dyson and Cole Pencosky each had three hits. All of Pencosky's hits were doubles, and he drove in two.
INSPIRATION ACADEMY 14, OTTAWA HILLS (OHIO) 0 (5) -- Payton Jenkins and Matt Ambrosini combined on a two-hitter to lift the Lions to 15-4. Cesar Bernal hit a two-run home run, and Troy Nichols had two hits and two RBIs for Inspiration Academy. Ambrosini also had two hits and two RBIs.
PALMETTO 9, NORTH PORT 8 -- Jordan Whitaker knocked in Trinity Vega with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Tigers defeated the Bobcats in a Class 7A-District 10 contest.
Kaitlyn Ripley got the victory with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Sabria Bruton went 3-for-3, and Ripley had two hits and two RBIs.
CLASS 3A-DISTRICT 10 TOURNAMENT -- There will be no area representatives at the state tournament from Class 3A-District 10. Though the area crowned one champion at the Treasure Island Golf and Tennis Club -- Braden River's Larissa Labolt won at No. 5 singles -- it wasn't enough to send any individuals or teams to the state championships.
Lakewood Ranch's Ashley Bongart lost a tight match to Largo's Alexis Franco at No. 1 singles, falling 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).
At No. 1 doubles on the boys side, Lakewood Ranch's Titus Strom and Jaques Swanepoel lost to Venice's Alex Fong and Shiv Krishnaswamy 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Strom lost to Sarasota's Andre Johnson at No. 1 singles and the Mustangs' Taylor Beliveau lost at No.4 singles to Erica Dempsey.
Led by Labolt, who defeated Venice's Laura Dempsey 6-4, 6-1, Braden River led area girls teams with 10 points, which was fourth overall. On the boys side, Lakewood Ranch was third with 13 points.
