Legislature's choice: funds for kids or pork projects?

April 1, 2014

It was interesting to see two articles in the March 26 Bradenton Herald.

One was on the front page reporting on the needs that Florida's Department of Children and Families has to make the agency more responsive to children's needs. More money would be necessary to help the agency help the children before more harm could be done to them.

On the front page of the local section was a report about the Legislature having excess funds. The article went on to say they would be bringing home the pork barrel money for their districts. Much of the funding will go to private entities.

I know this is an election year and the Legislature wants to make their constituents happy, but I think saving unfortunate children's lives is much more important than supplying money that will help them win re-election.
