McCabe's owners open Market on Bradenton's Old Main

Convenience store and sandwich shop carries the bare necessities

BRADENTON -- Whether it's donuts or diapers, beer or beef jerky, the owners of a new convenience store downtown know that people have basic needs.

Thomas Stynes and Lou Thomey, owners of McCabes Irish Pub, opened the Market on Main Street this week on Bradenton's Old Main along with Marc Campbell to provide a walkable place for downtown residents and workers to get what they need and go.

"All the basic fundaments that you expect to find in any good convenience store or grocery store," said Stynes, a native of Dublin suburb Ballyfermot. "That's what we're working toward."

The market features a variety of sodas, craft beers in six packs and tall boys for purchase, plenty of candy, and a small selection of basic canned and frozen foods, plus toiletries and other necessities. Soon, a coffee and donut station with newspapers and greeting cards, plus bins of fresh produce should be ready to go.

Planning for a market has been considered since McCabe's opened in 2011, Thomey said, as bar staff had to drive that to get the simplest things -- like garbage bags. A Market On Main Street Sandwich Shop is also attached to the convenience store for salads, soups and subs.

"Especially the folks that live at Westminster, they're kind of at the mercy of the transportation that Westminster provides like golf carts, but that's not really convenient for going across the river to Publix," Thom

Curtis Hamilton walked into the market from his boat docked at Twin Dolphin Marina to check out what he could pick up. Hamilton is thankful there's a place where he can grab a few items and head back to his boat now.

"Boats have small fridges, so we can't stock up on things, and it's really nice not having to drive somewhere to get it," Hamilton said.

Not having to drive is worth it, he said.

"Even if they charge a little bit more, it's cheaper to walk down here and grab it than to run to the store for one or two items," Hamilton said.

Stynes said the marina was an underserved market after a convenience store closed at Twin Dolphin, and boaters would frequently stop in asking when he would open.

"For them to have a little community store, a little grocery store, it means the world to them," Stynes said.

The market, 312 12th St. W,, will continue to fill up with more products -- such as coffee and produce -- in the coming week. The attached Market on Main Street Sandwich Shop has been open for a month and serves up heaping portions of lunchmeat for subs and salads. The deli meats are sliced right at the counter for a fresh sub, he said, including Boar's Head for the pastrami and corned beef.

"All too often you go into a sandwich shop and you're like, 'Where's the meat?'" Stynes said. That's not the case at the Market where two hands are required to hold sandwiches like The Kitchen Sink Sub, which includes ham, turkey, roast beef, bacon and cheese or the Bradentucky B.L.T. with plenty of bacon, tomatoes and avocado.

Initial hours will be 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesdays, with a closing time of midnight. On Thursdays, Friday and Saturdays it will remain open until 2 a.m. and open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays. The store is contemplating opening earlier depending on community feedback, the owners said.

The sandwich shop also delivers food to McCabe's and other area bars on Old Main, Stynes added.

"We run stuff to the Distillery, to Lost Kangaroo, over at Old Main," he said. "If they're hungry, call."

The store has been a long time coming. Work commenced in September to demolish the interior of the form Om Gaia Center and rebuild, including pouring a new concrete slab and installing new floors and equipment. The market owners also anticipate applying for a façade improvement grant from the city's Downtown Development Authority to beautify the entrance.

"It's fun when it's built, and it's done," Stynes said, who added he's been having to wrangle contractors like a herd of cats. Styles added he's thankful to his landlord and city staff for helping with permits to make the construction process easier.
