Phils place Hamels, five others on DL

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Phillies placed pitcher Cole Hamels on the 15-day disabled list Friday.

Hamels has been battling a sore left shoulder all spring and hasn't appeared in an official spring training game as he continues to recover. He threw 30 pitches in a minor league spring game on Thursday and reportedly felt great afterward.

It was expected that the left-hander would begin the season on the disabled list. He wants to make five more rehab starts with regular rest in between, meaning he should return by the end of April.

Hamels is coming off a somewhat disappointing 2013 campaign in which the 29- year-old went just 8-14 with a 3.60 earned average in 33 starts.

The Phillies also placed infielders Freddy Galvis (knee) and Darin Ruf (oblique), and pitchers Mike Adams (right shoulder surgery), Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (right shoulder tendinitis) and Ethan Martin (right shoulder inflammation) on the 15-day disabled list on Friday.

All the moves are retroactive to March 21, except Adams, whose retroactive date is March 26.
