Man jailed after fleeing from police in West Bradenton

Ricky Cheney, traffic violations, failure to stop, $8,500 bond

BRADENTON -- A 47-year-old man raced away from police early Friday instead of stopping for a routine traffic violation in West Bradenton, detectives reported.

Just before 4 a.m., a Bradenton police detective tried to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 5100 block of Manatee Avenue West. The vehicle sped away instead, heading north on 51st Street West.

The detective did not pursue the vehicle as the incident was only a traffic violation. But he was able to keep sight of the vehicle and saw the driver bail in the 5100 block of 2nd Avenue West, according to the report.

The driver entered a home there, leaving a passenger inside the vehicle, the report stated. Manatee sheriff's officers arrived to assist. A short time later, the driver exited the house and was taken into custody on multiple charges, including fleeing to elude, a felony; resisting arrest and driving without a license.

The suspect, Ricky Cheney, was being held on $8,500 bond.
