— A hospital patient is charged with possession of a controlled substance after doctors discovered a small bag of pills inside his stomach, authorities said Thursday.

Personnel at Blake Medical Center contacted the Bradenton Police Department after the patient told doctors he "may have digested narcotics to avoid detection when stopped by law enforcement earlier that evening," according to a police media release.

The patient was admitted to the emergency room early Wednesday morning with abdominal pain and underwent surgery, police said. Doctors then found the small bag of pills, which they turned over to responding officers.

Police and the department's crime scene investigators opened the bag and confirmed that "narcotic pills" were inside. They were taken into evidence.

The patient is still at the hospital and officers requested a warrant for his arrest, police said. His name was not immediately released Thursday night.
