Palmetto man charged with assault with firearm

MANATEE -- A 35-year-old Palmetto man was arrested early Monday morning and charged with aggravated assault with a firearm and battery stemming from an incident of domestic violence.

Greg Hamilton fired his Glock handgun into the ground in his front yard at 12:15 a.m. Monday after he had a dispute with a family member, according to a Manatee County Sheriff's Office arrest report.

The family member was talking on the phone when Hamilton started making comments that she did not find appropriate, according to the report.

The victim then hung up the phone and told Hamilton not to make comments like he had been making while she is talking.

According to the victim, Hamilton then put her in a choke hold, using his right arm, the report states.

Hamilton blocked the victim's exit from the residence, slapping her on the face in the process, according to the report.

The victim was able to get out of the house and walked across the street where she heard Hamilton say, "Do you think I could hit you from here?" she reported to authorities.

She then heard one gun shot, according to the report.

Hamilton told deputies he had consumed eight to nine beers before he fired the handgun.

Hamilton remained in the Manatee County jail Monday afternoon on no bond, according to the sheriff's office website.
