Prep baseball: BCS defeats Oklahoma state champion
BRADENTON -- The Bradenton Christian baseball team turned a triple play behind the three-hit pitching of Jake Lister and Hunter McGarry on Saturday as the Panthers defeated Oklahoma state champion Silo 2-1.
The first three Silo batters reached against Lister in the first inning to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead. But the next batter hit a line drive to second base with the runners on the move, resulting in a triple play.
Lister, who went 4 2/3 innings, and winning pitcher McGarry, who went 2 1/3 innings, combined for eight strikeouts.
David Hinkel drove in Lance Perkins with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning for BCS (11-5). Hinkel was 2-for-3.
Juco baseball: Hillsborough C.C. knocks off SCF
MANATEE -- Cory Reid went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, but the State College of Florida baseball suffered a 12-7 defeat at the hands of rival Hillsorough Community College at Robert C. Wynn Field.
Manatee product Trevor Beeman added two hits and two RBIs for the Manatees (19-10, 5-5 Suncoast Conference). Starter Evin Lynch suffered the defeat.
Golf: Two share lead at City Senior Championship
BRADENTON -- Mark Bueby and Jim Pfrogner fired 71s Saturday at River Run Golf Links to share the lead after the first round at the 17th annual City of Bradenton Senior Championship.
Jim Stone trails by one shot in the 107-golfer field, and David Peabody is two strokes back heading into Sunday's final round.
Tennis: Sharapova outlasts Safarova at Sony Open
KEY BISCAYNE -- Maria Sharapova converted her ninth match point to beat Lucie Safarova 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-2 in the third round at the Sony Open.
Sharapova closed out the victory 56 minutes after her first match point, which came in the tiebreaker. She had another match point in that set, and seven more in the final game.
Earlier Serena Williams needed 2 hours to beat Caroline Garcia 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
MLS: Rapids blank Timbers, win with penalty kicks
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- Vicente Sanchez and Deshorn Brown scored on penalty kicks two minutes apart in the second half to lead the Colorado Rapids to a 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers.
Sanchez scored his second penalty kick in as many games in the 73rd minute and Brown got his in the 75th for Colorado (1-0-1).
ELSEWHERE -- Robbie Keane scored late in the first half, and visiting Los Angeles bounced back from a season-opening loss with a 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake. ... Bernardo Anor scored first-half goals from close range with his head and from afar with his left foot and Columbus held on to defeat Philadelphia 2-0 in the Crew's home opener. ... England star Jermain Defoe scored his third MLS goal in two games to lift Toronto FC over D.C. United 1-0 in Toronto's home opener. ... Vancouver remained unbeaten with a scoreless draw at New England.
