SARASOTA -- Church leaders, members and friends of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church will break ground on a $400,000 expansion of more than 2,000 square feet at 11:45 a.m. Sunday.
The expansion will more than double the size of the fellowship hall while adding a large all-purpose room for storage on its second level.
Participants will include Pastor Rusty Leavitt and SMP Pastor Todd Kuehn; Mike Turner, president of the congregation; Dan Najjar, charter member of Beautiful Savior; and Jim Toedter of the building committee.
Dan Najjar of Najjar Contruction Inc. said he expects construction to be completed by September.
The Lawson Group provided the architectural design.
Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church began as a mission congregation in 1986, and purchased its location at 2461 Prospect Road, Sarasota, in 1989, which included a steel building on almost 10 acres.
A new sanctuary and fellowship hall was dedicated in 2002 and the congregation has grown to around 500 members.
The steel building that served as the first church, was dedicated to the first pastor, Wayman Still, who passed away in 2013. The Wayman L. Still Building now provides offices, classrooms and an activity center.
A contemporary worship service is offered at 5:30 p.m. Saturday with traditional service held at 8 a.m. Sunday and traditional and contemporary at 10:30 a.m.
Adult Bible class and Sunday school is at 9:15 a.m. Sunday in the Fellowship Hall.
