— A man was killed after he experienced a "medical event" and crashed into a palm tree Friday morning along Interstate 75, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

Nicholas P. Marsicano, 59, of Lutz, was headed northbound on I-75/State Road 93 around 4:20 a.m. at the time of the crash, according to an FHP report.

Marsicano was in the outside lane approaching the overpass of Border Road when he experienced "some type of medical event," the report states.

He lost control of his 2004 Chevy Venture and veered off the east shoulder of the roadway, striking a guard rail, investigators said.

Marsicano then veered back across the northbound lanes and off into the center grass median. His car entered the tree line and crashed into a palm tree, according to the report.

Marsicano was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the report.

It was not known if alcohol was a factor, the report indicates.
