Anglers fishing with me on my Action Craft flats skiff, the Snook Fin-Addict out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released snook and jacks on flies at night in the ICW near Venice and trout, Spanish mackerel and pompano on flies, DOA Deadly Combos and CAL jigs with shad tails in Sarasota Bay during the week of March 9. We fished deep grass flats on both sides of Sarasota Bay depending on wind direction for the bay action. The best bite of the week was fly fishing for snook and jacks at night.
Fishing was good during the week of March 9 aboard my Action Craft Coastal Bay boat, the O'Fishall out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key. Despite a front moving through mid-week, fly and spin anglers managed to catch snook, Spanish mackerel, spotted seatrout, jack crevalle and bluefish.
On March 9, Todd and Zack Emslander, joined by Gary Rockne, fished Sarasota Bay with me. They caught several Spanish mackerel to 4 pounds, spotted seatrout and ladyfish while fishing the deeper grass flats using DOA Cal Shad Tails in glow/ gold rush No. 309 on a chartreuse jigheads.
On the evening of March 11, I had a snook trip with Dan, Ken and Matt Brogie. The trio caught and released a few snook using DOA Shrimp in glow/holo flk No. 308. We fished the lighted docks in the ICW near Venice and Nokomis.
On March 15, fly angler Karl Sandbiller and spin angler Jessica Volkl from Germany enjoyed a day on the water catching and releasing spotted seatrout, Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle and ladyfish using synthetic Clouser minnows and DOA CAL Shad tail jigs.
Robert and Mike Heath from Lakeland had a good morning on Sarasota Bay fishing the deep grass flats. This was Mike's first time fishing in saltwater, and he caught on quickly on how to use a DOA Cal Shad tail jig. Mike caught Spanish mackerel to 3 pounds, jack crevalle, spotted seatrout and ladyfish. Way to go!

Frank Zaffino, from Rochester, N.Y., fished Sarasota Bay with me on March 14. He caught and released a few trout, jacks and ladyfish on Ultra Hair Clouser flies. Mike Manning, from Sarasota, and Jim Samuels and Ray Branham, from Bradenton, fished with me on March 15. They had steady action with trout, ladyfish, jacks and a couple of Spanish mackerel on CAL jigs with shad tails and DOA Deadly Combos.
Fly angler Tim Gibian, from Frederick, Md., fished with me on Sunday. With an approaching front, the wind blew 25 mph out of the southeast by the end of our trip, making it very tough to hide. We bumped up to a 9-weight rod with a heavier Clouser fly, which made it a little easier to deal with the wind, and he persisted and caught a few trout and ladyfish. The best way to catch fish on a fly is to keep your fly in the water!
