MANATEE -- A 45-year-old Gibsonton man was arrested Thursday after he traveled to Manatee County with the intent of having sex with a 14-year-old girl, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

However, the girl was, in fact, a law enforcement officer he had been communicating with online during a recent undercover investigation known as Green Shepherd III, according to a news release.

During the conversation, the suspect, Bennie Mack Brewer II, said he wanted to have sex with the child.

Last month, 25 people were arrested during Green Shepherd III and charged with going online and then traveling with the intent of having sex with a minor.

"Brewer was unable to travel during operation GSIII due to his overloaded work schedule," the report states. "Over the next 30 days Brewer solicited the minor multiple times.

"Today Brewer drove from Hillsborough County with the intent to pick the minor up and have sexual intercourse with her in his mother’s minivan. Brewer arrived at the predetermined meeting location and was arrested without incident," the sheriff's office said.

Brewer, who was arrested just before noon, faces charges of traveling to meet a minor and engage in sexual acts; use of a computer to solicit a minor to engage in sex acts; and attempted lewd and lascivious battery.

Brewer is being held without bond at the Manatee County jail.
