Bruins blow late lead,suffer season's 1st loss

One bad inning cost the Bayshore softball team its perfect season.

St. Petersburg Lakewood scored seven times in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Bruins 10-9 on Tuesday in Class 5A-District 10 action.

The Spartans (7-6, 5-1) collected just two hits, one of them a grand slam, in the inning. They benefited from two Bayshore errors and five walks.

The defeat leaves the Bruins (14-1, 6-1) in a tie with Lakewood for first place in the loss column. Bayshore has one more district game against Southeast.

Marina Clark led the Bayshore offense on Tuesday, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple. Kristin Staley added two hits.

BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 10, BOOKER 2 -- Kara Saylor pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts to lead the Panthers past the visiting Tornadoes.

Saylor helped her own cause at the dish, knocking in two runs on three hits with a home run for Bradenton Christian (6-5). Allanah Gibson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Carley Carbary added two hits for the Panthers.


BRADEN RIVER 4, PALMETTO 1 -- Eric Kimsey went the distance, allowing an unearned run and six hits to lift the host Pirates over the Tigers in Class 7A-District 10 play.

Brian Dillingham went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Matt Tarrill was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored for Braden River (8-5, 3-4).

Palmetto got a 3-for-3 performance from Harrison Mundy.

FORT MYERS CANTERBURY 3, SAINT STEPHEN'S 0 -- Nick Rodhouse allowed just four hits and two earned runs in a complete game, but the visiting Falcons (7-7) fell to the Cougars. Saint Stephen's collected four hits.

JV -- Colton Zimring pitched 6 2/3 solid innings, striking out six, and Tom Steier came on to strike out the final batter as Lakewood Ranch defeated visiting Manatee 3-2. Rhett Rampinelli went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Mustangs (10-1-2) on offense.

Girls tennis

MANATEE 7, SOUTHEAST 0 -- The host Hurricanes (9-2) had no trouble with the rival Seminoles (1-8), getting straight-set singles wins from Grayson Hall, Katelinn Wurm, Carolina Montes, Chloe Conboy and Noell Niemann. Hall and Wurm teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles, while Montes and Conboy won at No. 2 doubles.

BRADEN RIVER 5, SARASOTA 2 -- Daniela Ojeda and Natalie Marshall each won a singles match and came together for a doubles win as the host Pirates (5-4) downed the Sailors.

Julia Schwartz and Larissa Labolt won a singles matches for Braden River.

Boys tennis

MANATEE 7, SOUTHEAST 0 -- The host Hurricanes improved to 8-3 with double wins from Kevin Roman, Sage Stryczny, Joey Wyner and Dylan Clemann. Andre Sanchez added a singles win. The Seminoles fell to 2-8.

Girls lacrosse

OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 14, FORT MYERS CANTERBURY 9 -- Kimmy Comito had five goals and an assist to lead the host Thunder past the Cougars. Taylor Albano and Lexi Meyers each added three goals for ODA. Miller Condrack, Abby Lagasse and Adelaide Mahler had goals, and Abby Bannar made 12 saves.
