Manatee County should pay postage on absentee ballots

March 16, 2014

A voting win-win, and a stamp of approval:

I must say up front I was in favor of Manatee County Supervisor of Elections Mike Bennett's reduction in polling places and his reasoning for such action.

With the reduction in polling places now going into effect, I think the supervisor should reach out to all the potential absentee voters and offer free return postage on the ballots.

This gesture would be a reach-out to those voters making it an easy, carefree, no-cost effort to vote and mail in their ballot.

I believe this type of request was also stated at a Board of County Commissioners meeting, but I have not heard of the follow-up response from the supervisor's office.

This small gesture should be in place for the 2014 elections, analyzed to see the results, and then decide on how to proceed in the future.
