Suspect escapes on foot after leading Manatee deputies on car chase

A suspect escaped on foot after he led deputies on a car chase that ended with a crash into a guard rail Friday night.

The chase started when a Manatee County Sheriff's deputy attempted a traffic stop of a silver Chevy Malibu in the parking lot of the Quality Inn, 6706 14th St. W., around 8:40 p.m., according to a sheriff's office report.

The vehicle fled out of the parking lot, across U.S. 41 and into the parking lot of a Hess gas station, the report states.

The vehicle then continued onto Florida Boulevard heading west until it hit a guard rail and crashed at 6623 Columbia Drive, deputies said.

The driver fled the area on foot and was not apprehended, according to the report. A backpack loaded with a semi-automatic firearm and more narcotics was found in a backyard where the suspect was last seen running, according to the report.

A large amount of narcotics was also found inside the vehicle, deputies said.

The sheriff's office did not immediately provide a description of the suspect.
