Recap: Utah Valley U vs. Idaho

Las Vegas, NV (SportsNetwork.com) - Stephen Madison led all scorers with 25 points, as the Idaho Vandals outlasted the Utah Valley Wolverines, 74-69, in the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Orleans Arena.

Madison shot 7-of-13 from the field and 8-of-10 at the free-throw line for fifth-seeded Idaho (16-17), which will play New Mexico State in the championship game Saturday. Mike Scott and Connor Hill netted 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Mitch Bruneel scored 18 points for top-seeded Utah Valley (20-11), Holton Hunsaker registered 15 points and eight assists, Ben Aird had 14 points and eight rebounds and Zach Nelson logged 12 points.

Idaho took a slim 30-29 lead into the halftime locker room despite getting outshot from the field in the opening stanza, 43.5 percent to 40 percent. The Vandals did manage to outscore the Wolverines from 3-point range during the opening 20 minutes, 12-6.

The Vandals led by 10 with under 10 minutes to play before the Wolverines stormed back to make their deficit just one, 65-64, with 4:04 to play, but they would never overtake the lead. Idaho scored five unanswered points to create separation down the stretch.

Idaho held on despite getting outscored in the paint, 40-22. The Vandals' bench outscored the Wolverines' reserves, 21-2.
