Florida man charged with killing dog that walked on his property

March 10, 2014

A Hudson man has been arrested after authorities say he shot and killed a neighbor's dog for straying onto his property.

Hugh Matthew Schnacky stood behind his driveway's gate and aimed a 22-caliber rifle at Hunter, a 2-year-old black labrador, who stood several yards away, a Pasco sheriff's report states, according to a story in the Tampa Bay Times.

Neighbors heard the gunshot, then saw Hunter, described as a gentle and timid dog, drop dead.

Schnacky, 55, told deputies on scene that he shot the dog, the report states.

He was arrested on a charge of animal cruelty and booked into the Land O'Lakes jail. He was released a few hours later on $5,000 bail.
