Put nutritional labels on beer, wine and all alcohol

It was announced recently that the FDA is looking into updating their informational labels on prepared foods and drinks, the ones that show calories, fat grams, cholesterol, sodium, etc.

A needed change would be more realistic "serving size" amounts, as most are now impractically small, like the one-ounce "serving" for chips equaling about 15 potato chips or 12 Doritos.

Really!? Who are they kidding?

The FDA is also considering emphasizing calories over fat content, and that would be a good thing.

But how about adding nutritional labels to alcoholic beverages?

One survey I read listed beer as the third most popular drink -- not just alcoholic drink -- in the country, behind water and coffee. Most surveys have beer as the No. 1 alcoholic beverage in the world.

And although I couldn't find a poll that combined beer, wine, liqueurs, and hard-liquor drinks, my guess is they may be the most consumed beverage group in the U.S.

So why do none of them have labels?

I enjoy beer and wine, and I'd like to be able to compare the fat, calorie and cholesterol values of different brands and types.

I think the FDA should be forced to end the alcoholic beverage industry's "free ride" regarding labeling.

There couldn't be money involved somehow, as through lobbying, could there?
