Business briefs: Motorworks Brewing gets grain silos

BRADENTON -- With the arrival of a 2,000 bushel grain silo, Motorworks Brewing is another step closer to becoming a full production brewery.

The 45-foot-tall silo is a key component for the large brew house. The spent grain goes to local farmers to supplement their livestock feed.

Additional equipment to the brewery is expected this week and early next week.

Disney laying off 700 from interactive unit

LOS ANGELES -- Disney says it is laying off 700 people from the interactive unit that makes video games and operates websites, about a quarter of the workforce in the division.

A Walt Disney Co. spokesman confirmed the layoffs Thursday.

The move narrows the company's focus on mobile and social games that use key Disney characters. Some games that Disney acquired when it bought social game maker Playdom in 2010 for $563 million, such as Sorority Life, will be discontinued.

It is also discontinuing one-time hits, such as music play-along game, Tap Tap Revenge.

Disney Interactive had long been a money-losing unit and last month posted only its third profitable quarter since results began being broken out in 2008, thanks in part to its Disney Infinity console game, which Disney will keep supporting.

FTC says ADT settles deceptive reviews charges

NEW YORK -- U.S. regulators said Thursday that ADT Corp. has settled charges that it deceived consumers by paying people to recommend its home security products on media outlets without disclosing their connection to the company.

The Federal Trade Commission said ADT paid child-safety, home-security and technology experts more than $300,000 to promote its ADT Pulse security system online and on TV, including during a January 2011 segment on NBC's "Today" show. One expert received more than $200,000 and two of them received a free ADT Pulse security system and monthly monitoring service, which the FTC said is worth about $4,000.

ADT set up the media interviews through its public relations firms and booking agents, the commission said. The paid endorsers were introduced by show hosts and reporters as experts and their connection to ADT was never revealed. The endorsers also talked about other products, making the segment look as if it was an unbiased review.

ADT agreed to remove misrepresented reviews and endorsements and to disclose any future endorsements clearly, the FTC said.

A representative for ADT, which is based in Boca Raton, said the company is happy to have resolved the matter amicably. A representative from NBC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Staples to close 225 stores because of online sales

Staples will shut down more than 10 percent of its stores in North American by the end of next year.

The nation's largest office-supply company said Thursday that nearly half of its sales are now generated online and it is working aggressively to cut costs and become more efficient. It aims to close up to 225 North American stores as part of a plan to save about $500 million by the end of 2015.

It had already closed dozens of stores in the past year.

Staples would not elaborate on the number of jobs that are being cut, nor the locations of stores that will close.

The recession did heavy damage to chains like Staples, which also face growing competition online as well as from discount stores.

Staples has 1,846 stores in North America and Canada, the vast majority in the United States.
