PALMETTO -- The Palmetto Historical Park & Manatee County Agricultural Museum will host a two-pronged event Saturday with a celebration including Heritage Day and the ongoing Legacy of Valor Campaign.

The event is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 515 10th Ave. W., Palmetto.

Heritage Day is a free event featuring an open house, blacksmith, heritage sewing and a quilter. The 1880 U.S. Post Office will be open for business featuring a 2014 cancellation designed by Parrish resident, Kay Davis, so bring your mail to be posted.

At 11:30 a.m., storyteller Windell Campbell will spin tales for the public's listening pleasure. "Soupy and Friends" from Cortez will provide musical entertainment all day.

A special Heritage Day feature is the opening Legacy of Valor Veterans Art Exhibit featuring works by veterans. The exhibit includes painting, photography and sculptures.

The Park and Museum are community partners in Legacy of Valor, a campaign created by The Patterson Foundation to honor veterans and their families around Southwest Florida. The venue is one of 100 community-driven partnerships involved in recognizing the service and sacrifice of all veterans.

Children's activities include "What Freedom Means to Me," a writing and painting workshop, crafts and a children's basic training obstacle course. The workshop requires reservations.

The North River Fire Department will also be sponsoring a children's fire challenge. The Palmetto High School FFA petting corral will have goats, and First Baptist Church of Palmetto will be providing free train rides to children.

Manasota Operation Troop Support will collect items from visitors such as beef jerky, Slim Jims, baby wipes, toothbrushes, canned pop-top beef stews and pasta to send to troops. These items can be dropped in the collection bins at park entrances.

Word of Mouth BBQ will be selling lunch items, and Alex's Lemonade Stand will be raising funds to benefit childhood cancer research. The Woman's Club of Palmetto will be holding its annual Chicken and Yellow Rice Luncheon for $12, and various Palmetto High School reunions will take place during the luncheon.

Across the street, the Palmetto Public Library will hold its annual Heritage Day book sale 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
