WWII tail gunner's son in awe of B-29 here

March 6, 2014

Appreciation and a great deal of respect is what I felt visiting the remarkable vintage World War II airshow at Sarasota Bradenton Airport. The main attraction was the colossal B-29 super fortress bomber named "FiFi."

Bold in concept, brilliant in execution, this high-altitude, long-range aircraft was state of the art in its day.

My father served aboard the B-29 "Dauntless Dotty" as a tail gunner and flew over 20 missions over the Pacific theater.

After seeing up close and examining the cramped Spartan-like interior of this B-29, it makes one wonder how these brave crew members put it all together and pulled off some of the most demanding bombing missions of our time.

The men and women that served our country at home and abroad during these times truly are the Greatest Generation!
