The regular Friday night Music in the Park series gets going this week on Bradenton's Riverwalk.
Every Friday between now and April 11, Bradenton-area bands and orchestras will offer free evening concerts. This event is part of the Legacy of Valor, The Patterson Foundation's campaign to honor the service and sacrifice of the men and women in our nation's armed forces.
This week, it's a special "Music and Movies in the Park" event with a screening of "Kelly's Heroes" and a performance by the Sarasota Pops Orchestra.
"Kelly's Heroes" is a great action comedy from 1970 with a phenomenal cast: Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, Donald Sutherland and Gavin MacLeod are part of a group of American soldiers during World War II who sneak across enemy lines to try to snag a cache of Nazi treasure. Look closely for small Yves Montand and John Landis in small roles.
The Sarasota Pops Orchestra has been around for almost 40 years, when its started as a five-member outfit called Sarasota Community Orchestra. It now boasts the 60 professional and amateur musicians conducted by Robyn L. Bell. The group will perform music honoring veterans from all American wars.
Food and beverages will be for sale. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
Details: 6 p.m. March 7, Riverwalk Mosaic Amphitheater, 452 Third Ave. W., Bradenton. Tickets: Free. Information: 941-840-0013, www.realizebradenton.com.
