BRANDON -- A man was shot and killed early Tuesday after the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said he stabbed a neighbor's cat and tried to break an apartment window.

According to Sheriff David Gee, the suspect, whose identity has not been released, was shot near the 3100 block of Bloomingdale Villas Court. No deputies were injured.

Authorities said 911 calls received around 5:30 a.m. indicated a man was trying to break an apartment window. When deputies arrived, they found the suspect with a butcher knife and a 15-lb. weight that he dropped. Gee also said burned clothing was found outside the suspect's apartment, which is a short distance from shooting location.

Three deputies fired multiple shots at the suspect, who later died at an area hospital.

"Fortunately, all of our deputies are okay," Gee said. "We're not sure why the suspect was trying to break into the apartment. He was known as a person that caused some problems in the neighborhood.

"We don't know if he had mental issues but he did become aggressive."

The shooting remains under investigation.
