'Dogs on the Move' taking 11 dogs from Manatee shelter to new homes

February 27, 2014

MANATEE -- Eleven dogs are on their way from the Manatee County animal shelter to new homes in the Midwest, thanks to the "Dogs on the Move" animal transportation program.

A first-ever "going away party" was held Thursday for 11 dogs. They are being moved by van to homes in Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois.

Dogs on the Move is a Miami-based nonprofit. Former in 2011, the group transfers animals at risk of being euthanized.

"All of the Manatee dogs going on this transport are bigger breeds and many are bully breed mixes, which are the types most at risk in municipal shelters in Florida.," a news release states.

Officials said the transfers will help relieve pressure caught by the recent seizures of large groups of animals, including from the Napier shelter in East Manatee.
