GAME NOTES: The Elon Phoenix look to keep their slim hopes at a regular-season conference title alive when they host the Wofford Terriers at Alumni Gym.
Elon (11-3) enters action just two games behind Southern Conference leader Davidson (13-1) with two games left. If Elon wins and Davidson loses to UNC- Greensboro, the regular-season title will come down to Saturday's season finale between the Phoenix and Wildcats at Alumni Gym.
The Phoenix have done their best to keep pace with Davidson, winning seven in a row after Monday's 78-49 win over Furman. Lucas Troutman scored a game-high 23 points for Elon, which used a 14-0 second-half run to take control and cruise to the win.
Jack Isenbarger became Elon's all-time leader in 3-pointers made in the victory, passing Chris Kiger's 16-year record of 259. Isenbarger nailed two shots from beyond the arc in the win and now sits at 261 for his career.
The two-game homestand for the Phoenix to end the season gives the team a chance to catch Davidson. Elon has won four straight at home and is an impressive 11-2 at Alumni Gym this season.
Wofford also has a lot to play for. The Terriers enter this game with a 10-4 conference mark, which is tied with Western Carolina and Chattanooga for third in the SoCon. Having already secured a first-round bye as a top-five finisher in the conference, the Terriers are jockeying for a better seeding.
With a home game against UNC-Greensboro left after this, the Terriers have a chance at the second seed if they win out.
Wofford is coming off a 59-49 setback to Davidson on Saturday. Spencer Collins finished with 16 points for the Terriers, who had a nine-game winning streak snapped.
Karl Cochran leads Wofford with 15.2 ppg. Collins adds 13.5 ppg and Lee Skinner tallies 11 ppg for the Terriers, who average 68 ppg this season. Troutman, meanwhile, leads the Phoenix with 16 ppg. Sebastian Koch (12.4) and Ryley Beaumont (10.2) round out the double-figure scorers for Elon, which averages 75.9 ppg.
This is the only meeting of the season between these two clubs and also a very important one if they finish tied in the standings as this lone game will serve as the tiebreaker.
Elon should come out fired up to have a chance at the top seed. The Phoenix are a better team at home and it should show against Wofford, which is sub-.500 on the road.
