Campus sets memorial for Dylan Proctor
SARASOTA -- The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee will have a memorial service Mar. 1 for alumnus James Dylan Proctor, a high-profile student who was lost to a fatal car accident on Interstate 75.
The service is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the New College waterfront behind the Caples Mansion on Caples Drive.
The family is inviting Proctor's friends, family, classmates and the USF Sarasota-Manatee faculty and staff.
MTI Tour of Kitchens boasts delectable menus
BRADENTON -- The Manatee Technical Institute Foundation will hold its Fourth Annual Tour of Kitchens from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in the historic Whitfield Estates neighborhood. Guests will enjoy culinary delights prepared by local chefs at each home, followed by desserts and a silent auction at Sara Bay Country Club.
Five select homes will be open for guests to "tour the kitchens." Guests will enjoy a wine paired with the dish, tour the homes and talk with the chefs and other guests.
Participating chefs, restaurants and dishes they will serving:
Nicholas Horne, Anna Maria Oyster Bar, shrimp fondue;
Ray Arpke, Euphemia Haye, classic Caesar salad;
Jamie Gregorich, Manatee Technical Institute Culinary Arts Program, lamb lollipop on carrot and potato au gratin;
Joe Martin, Mexicali Border Café, beef chimichanga with rice and beans; and
Dave Shiplett, SOMA Creekside, ahrimp and grits.
Desserts prepared by MTI Baking and Pastry Arts students served at the Sara Bay Country Club from 5 to 7 p.m.
Tickets may be ordered at mtifoundation.org for $55. VIP package for $800 includes limousine service, a bottle of champagne and tickets for a party of eight. Proceeds benefit the MTI Foundation.

Pre-kindergarten enrollment opens March 3
MANATEE -- Voluntary pre-kindergarten opens March 3 through March 14 for parents of children 4 years old on or before Sept. 1.
To enroll students in voluntary pre-kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year, parents must register in-person at the Manatee County School District parent information center on Manatee Avenue East.
To fill out a VPK school choice application, parents must bring a birth certificate and a certificate of eligibility from the Early Learning Coalition at 600 Eighth Ave. W. in Palmetto.
Voluntary pre-kindergarten depends on enrollment capacity and other demographic criteria.
Manatee student headed to Washington, D.C.
MANATEE -- Southeast High School student Richecar Polinice was one of two eleventh-graders selected in Florida by the Peace River Electric Cooperative to attend the national Youth Tour to Washington D.C.
Meagan Yopp of Fort Meade Middle-Senior High School was the other.
Polinice will join 30 students from other Florida electric cooperatives.
More than 1,500 students from electric co-ops in 46 states are expected to participate.
To be considered, students submit an application an two-page essay related to the topic of energy conservation.
