MANATEE -- A proposal for 200 single family homes at Long Bar Pointe was OKd 6-1 Tuesday by the Manatee County Commission.
Residences are planned across 61.75 acres near the intersection of El Conquistador Parkway and Champions Row Street. Developers Cargor Partners VIII/Long Bar Pointe LLC of Bradenton won approval of a preliminary site plan for the first phase of the Long Bar Pointe project facing Sarasota Bay in southwest Manatee County.
Commissioner Michael Gallen cast the lone vote against the project.
Seventeen residents spoke against the proposal, most citing environmental concerns about the property overlooking Sarasota Bay, however, no wetlands will be affected by construction, planners said.
Any coastal building will create future liabilities for our descendants, predicted audience member Suzanna Young.
Scientists have been warning about global warming, and to ignore that, I think, would be irresponsible, she told commissioners.
If this development is to go through, and we havent seen the whole plan yet, well have our day today, but in 25, 50 years, our children and grandchildren will have to deal with all these liabilities, with all the structures that are along the coastlines, she said. I think we need to be paying attention to the big picture."
Developers Carlos Beruff and Larry Lieberman attended parts of the meeting.
The development will be a private, gated community with two separate gates feeding traffic to El Conquistador Parkway.
