Greenville, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Stephen Croone and Keith Belfield both tallied 15 points as the Furman Paladins captured a 68-53 win over the Mountaineers of Appalachian State in Southern Conference play at Timmons Arena.
Croone also handed out six assists for the Paladins (9-18, 3-11 SoCon) as they won for the second time in the last three outings. William Gates pitched in with 13 points and Charlie Reddick 11 rebounds off the bench for the hosts.
Tommy Spagnolo recorded a double-double for the Mountaineers (8-19, 4-10) as he tallied a game-high 16 points and cleared 11 boards, five of those at the offensive end. Tab Hamilton and Jay Canty accounted for 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Michael Obacha pulled down 11 rebounds but was held scoreless as the team bowed for the fourth time in five outings.
ASU fell behind immediately and never recovered, shooting just 8-of-32 from the floor in the first half, including 1-of-6 behind the 3-point line, en route to a 25-21 deficit at the break.
After converting only 40 percent from the field through the first 20 minutes, the Paladins picked up the pass following intermission with 60.0 percent accuracy, while limiting the visitors to 37.9 percent, on the way to the 15- point decision.
The Mountaineers won the battle of the boards, 45-31, pulling down 21 rebounds at the offensive end of the floor, but they also hurt themselves with 15 turnovers.
