Feb. 22: The Braden River High School Key Club will hold its third annual volleyball tournament to benefit Project Eliminate, a partnership between Kiwanis International and UNICEF to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, at 10 a.m. Feb. 22 on Holmes Beach. Registration will be accepted until Feb. 20, and registration forms may be found at Completed registration forms may be sent to Businesses may donate for sponsorships, and donations will be accepted until the day of the event. Feb. 22: The Firearms Training Institute of Sarasota will host an NRA First Steps Pistol Course at 8 a.m. Feb. 22 at the AmericInn Hotel Conference Room, 5931 Fruitville Road. The course will be taught by local NRA Certified Instructors and cover the basics of safe gun handling and shooting. The four-hour course will emphasize the safe and proper handling and use of pistols. Participants will learn about firearm safety, parts and operation, shooting fundamentals, maintenance, storage options and more. This course meets the Florida training requirements for Concealed Carry Permit applicants. Non-residents are also eligible. March 1: Braden River Little League 2014 Opening Day from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. March 1 will celebrate the start of the Little League season. Join the league for food, music, kids activities, slides, bounce houses and baseball games. Braden River Little League is at 5201 51st St. E.

March 13: The Pittsburgh Pirates and Bradenton Marauders are accepting registrants for the fifth annual Baseball Basics for Women clinic presented in partnership with Manatee Memorial Hospital. The clinic is intended for young adult and adult women interested in learning or refining their baseball fundamentals. It will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. March at McKechnie Field. The registration fee is $40. Pirates major league and minor league players and coaches will instruct participants in hitting, catching, running the bases and fielding. Each of the women will receive a free T-shirt and a ticket to the March 20 spring training game against the Baltimore Orioles. Gecko's Grill & Pub will provide dinner after the clinic. The Kona Bar built by NDC Construction will be open for family members and guests during the clinic and for participants during dinner. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Manatee Memorial Foundation. Registration for Baseball Basics for Women must be completed by Feb. 26 in order to be guaranteed a T-shirt. April 6-7: Team registrations are being accepted for the 2014 Lax Max Florida Lacrosse Tournament being held at Lakewood Ranch during the weekend of April 6-7. Lax Max is designed for recreation travel and town team programs within the state of Florida. The event offers a choice of either a one-day, three-game jamboree or a two-day tournament. Lax Max Florida features male and female round-robin competitions, with A, B and C recreation travel competition levels for the dual age groupings of U-10 through U-18.
