Police: Protesting artist breaks $1M vase at Miami art museum

February 17, 2014

MIAMI -- An artist protesting an exhibition at the new Pérez Art Museum Miami broke a million-dollar vase and was charged with criminal mischief, according to Miami police.

Maximo Caminero, 51, was in the museum on Sunday when he picked up an Ai Weiwei vase, according to the arrest report. A museum security guard told Caminero to put down the vase. He then "threw and broke the vase on the floor," the report said.

Caminero told police that he broke the vase in solidarity with local artists and in protest of the museum displaying international artwork.
