Buenos Aires, Argentina (SportsNetwork.com) - Mauro Zarate scored a pair of second-half goals on Saturday as Velez Sarsfield claimed its first win of the Clausura season with a 3-1 victory against Arsenal at the Estadio Julio Grondona.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the visitors struck three minutes into the second period when Zarate buried his first of the day. Ten minutes later Zarate completed his brace to give his club a two-goal margin.
Jorge Correa made it 3-0 for the visiting side in the 64th minute and things became even more difficult for Arsenal when Damian Perez was shown his marching orders 14 minutes from time.
Despite going down a man, Mariano Echeverria pulled one back for the hosts five minutes from time, but it wasn't enough as Velez Sarsfield came away with all three points.
The result sees Velez jump to third place in the table after two matches, while Arsenal has two defeats from its first two matches.
Elsewhere in Argentina on Saturday, Guido Carrillo scored the only goal of the match as Estudiantes moved into first place with a 1-0 win over All Boys, while Nicolas Blandi's eighth-minute goal held up as San Lorenzo earned a 1-0 win against Racing.
Gabriel Graciani's second-half tally was enough to lift Colon to a 1-0 result over Argentinos Juniors, while Tigre and Olimpo played to a scoreless draw.
On Sunday, Gimnasia La Plata cruised to a 3-0 win over Newell's Old Boys, while Atletico Rafaela topped Lanus, 3-0, behind a brace from Diego Vera.
Manuel Lanzini and Carlos Luna traded goals as Rosario Central and River Plate battled to a 1-1 draw, while Emiliano Rigoni, Luciano Lollo and Cesar Pereyra scored to lift Belgrano to a 3-2 triumph over Boca Juniors.
