Drunk driver damages city light pole, too drunk to flee, Bradenton police say

HERALD STAFF REPORTFebruary 15, 2014

— A drunk driver caused $3,000 in damage to a decorative light pole and crashed into a parked vehicle before trying to flee on foot, according to Bradenton police.

Officers were called to the Pier 22 restaurant in downtown Bradenton around 2:52 a.m. Saturday in reference to a vehicle that had partially pulled onto the sidewalk out front, a police report states.

Police learned the vehicle had struck a City of Bradenton decorative light pole on the northwest corner of Third Avenue West and 12th Street West, causing an estimated $3,000 in damage, according to the city electrician who was called to the scene.

The vehicle also struck a truck in the Pier 22 parking lot before coming to rest in front of the restaurant, police said.

The vehicle's registered owner, who was not identified in the report, was found nearby and "apparently had attempted to flee on foot but was too intoxicated to do so," the report states.

The person was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital for treatment.
