BRADNETON -- A Manatee High School senior is collecting jeans in hopes of making a difference in the community.
Ruth Pierre-Charles, 17, learned through the website dosomething.org that 1 in 3 homeless people in the United States are under the age of 18. She said one of the most requested items from these teens in need is a pair of jeans.
And so Pierre-Charles started a Jeans for Teens campaign at her school.
"Im collecting all sizes, said Pierre-Charles. It just has to be long pairs of jeans.
Pierre-Charles teacher said he is very proud of what she is doing.
I think what every teacher would like to do, is teach social responsibility in some way, said Michael Garland, who teaches physical science and physics. No matter what our subject is we all want to pass on our own social values to our students. Ruths done a great job.
So far Pierre-Charles has collected around 20 pairs of jeans. Shes hoping to collect dozens more.
Its really cool that you know youre doing something, said Pierre-Charles.
After the jeans have been collected, Pierre-Charles will drop them off at Aeropostale at Desoto Square Mall. From there, they will be delivered to those in need in Manatee County In six years, with the help from teens all over the country, dosomething.org has collected over 3.5 million pairs of jeans for the homeless.
If youd like to help, you can drop off your unwanted jeans at the front office of Manatee High School, 902 33rd Street Ct. W, Bradenton.
