Recap: Loyola Marymount vs. Portland

Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Thomas van der Mars notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Portland Pilots defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions, 71-64, in West Coast Conference play at the Chiles Center.

Ryan Nicholas netted 16 points for the Pilots (14-11, 6-7 WCC), who have won two of their last three games. Bryce Pressley and Bobby Sharp scored 14 and 11 points, respectively. Alec Wintering helped with 10 assists.

Evan Payne logged a game-high 21 points for the Lions (11-15, 3-11), who have dropped four straight. Anthony Ireland and Alex Osborne added 15 and 10 points, respectively.

In the opening half, the Lions shot 48 percent from the field and hit 9-of-11 from the free-throw line. The Pilots, in turn, shot 39.3 percent and trailed 36-29 at halftime.

Things fell apart for the Lions in the second half as they shot a mere 29 percent from the floor, including 0-of-9 from 3-point range. At the other end, the Pilots shot 58.6 percent, including 5-of-9 from the perimeter.

LMU shot just 3-of-16 from beyond the arc and was outscored 13-6 in second- chance points.
