Take Stock in Children grateful for support

February 13, 2014

University of South Florida football head coach Willie Taggart spoke about the importance of being a good mentor during Take Stock In Children's annual prayer breakfast in early February 2014. About 300 people attended the breakfast to benefit the mentoring and scholarship program. Taggart, a Palmetto native and Manatee High School graduate, said Manatee High School football head coach Joe Kinnan and Jim Harbaugh, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, are mentors for him.MARC MASFERRER/Bradenton Herald

Take Stock in Children Manatee was in the spotlight for providing deserving students the opportunity for a four-year post-secondary scholarship.

Take Stock in Children Manatee wants to thank the community for their support through mentoring and donations. It takes about $10,000 to provide the scholarship and the support for each student from middle school to that all important high school graduation day. Florida Prepaid College Foundation matches scholarship donations.

Take Stock can't provide these life-changing opportunities without this wonderful and nurturing Manatee County community. There was such an outpouring of giving recently and we look forward to your continued support.

Take Stock has awarded scholarships in Manatee County for 17 years. These scholarships support students who are almost always the first in their families to attend college. This program changes lives -- it changes families' hopes, dreams and expectations.

Take Stock requires an application process. When a student is accepted in the program, a contract is signed that includes agreeing to be drug and crime free, maintain good grades and behavior and meet with a mentor once a week for at least 30 minutes.

Mentoring is the key to the 96 percent high school graduation rate of students in Take Stock in Children. When these students know they are going to be accountable to that mentor once a week, it makes a difference. Mentors serve as listeners, guides on the side, and sometimes having those tough conversations about "keeping your eyes on the prize."
