MANATEE — One person was killed and another seriously injured in a traffic crash about 11:35 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 301 in Parrish, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP reported 83-year-old Julian Laney of Venice drove a 1999 Buick southbound on U.S. 301 near Doris Road and crossed the median to make a left turn at Fort Hamer Road.

The Buick reportedly then began traveling the wrong way — southbound in the northbound lane. As it approached a curve, a tractor trailer driven by a Tampa man was northbound in the inside lane approaching from the opposite direction.

The truck driver took evasive action by braking and turning left, but the right front of the car struck the right front of the truck, FHP reported.

Laney was pronounced dead at the scene. FHP rpeorted it is unknown whether alochol was a factor in the accident.

The 49-year-old truck driver was taken to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton where he was listed in serious condition, according to FHP.

U.S. 301 was closed for about five hours so crews could clean up fuel and oils on the roadway.
