HERALD STAFF REPORTFebruary 11, 2014

American pairs figure skaters Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay, who train at Ellenton Ice & Sports Complex, opened their competition at the Sochi Winter Olympics with a clean skate Tuesday morning.

Zhang and Bartholomay scored a 56.90, good for 14th place out of 20 skaters. The top 16 skaters advanced to Wednesday's free skate competition.

"They should be very proud of that skate," NBC Sports Network analyst Tara Lapinski said after the scores were announced.

American counterparts Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir, who skated just before the Ellenton pair, turned in a score of 67.44. They finished ninth in the short program.

Russians Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov lead with a score of 84.17.
