Business briefs: Free tax prep service available to Manatee seniors

MANATEE COUNTY -- Free AARP tax preparation sites are up and running for taxpayers with low to moderate income, with special attention to those 60 and olfer.

All sites prepare and file form 1040 electronically. All volunteers are trained in cooperation with the IRS to make sure taxpayers receive applicable tax credits and deductions. This year taxes are being done at five sites:

• The main library at 1301 Barcarrota Blvd., 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday and Friday. Sign-up begins at 8 a.m.

• Bayshore Gardens Community Church at 6228 26th St. W., from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday. Sign up begins at 11:15 a.m.

• Braden River Library, 4915 53rd Ave E., from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday by appointment only, sign up at 9 a.m.

• Freedom Village, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, by appointment. Call 941-357-2191.

• In Ellenton, taxes are prepared at Rocky Bluff Library, 6750 U.S. 301. Please check at any Manatee County library for the schedule. Dates and times are listed on the website:

Many walk-up sites have lines early, but a much shorter wait later. Plan to arrive one hour before scheduled closing at walk-up sites.

Bring all 2013 tax related documents, a copy of your 2012 return, cost and purchase date for any investments sold or exchanged, picture ID and Social Security document for all taxpayers and dependents.

Difficult conversations topic at LWRBA briefing

LAKEWOOD RANCH -- The Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance is offering a seminar to help area businesses develop talking strategies for dealing with difficult workplace conversations.

Doug Van Dyke, president of Leadership Simplified, will address these topics Feb. 26 at the LWRBA executive briefing.

The event will offer ideas and actions for immediate implementation. For over 25 years, Van Dyke has coached individuals and led hundreds of training programs that have enabled leaders to communicate more effectively, lead with passion, increase sales, embrace change, and smile as they choose to have more fun at the game of work. His repeat clients include American Express, Lockheed Martin, Humana, Nielsen Media Research, Sysco Foods, Bright House Networks, Bealls Department Stores, the University of South Florida and Melting Pot Restaurants. Van Dyke has appeared on numerous television and radio business programs, including the nationally syndicated talk show First Business.

Sales brisk at Concession golf course community

MANATEE COUNTY -- Sales at The Concession, an exclusive, gated golf course community, have kicked off quickly this year with

15 sites under contract to close in the first quarter.

At this year's Parade of Homes, The Concession will feature two new models -- the Verona by Lee Wetherington Homes and the Amalfi, by Arthur Rutenberg Homes.

Several other new models will open this year, creating a new model row in The Concession featuring builders including: John Neal Homes, Anchor Builders, John Cannon Homes, and Holliday Builders.

The community is seeing an explosion of home construction as well, with 15 homes underway, and 10 more to start in the next 90 days.
