Cullowhee, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Trey Sumler led all scorers with 25 points, and the Western Carolina Catamounts outlasted the Appalachian State Mountaineers in overtime, 84-75, in Southern Conference play at the Ramsey Center.
Brandon Boggs provided a spark off the bench with 15 points for the Catamounts (13-11, 6-3 SoCon). James Sinclair added 11 points, while Tawaski King and Tom Tankelewicz scored 10 apiece in the win.
Tommy Spagnolo led the way with 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Mountaineers (7-16, 3-7), who fell to 1-11 on the road this season. Ty Toney and Tab Hamilton rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Western Carolina claimed a narrow 31-30 halftime lead after holding the Mountaineers to 37.5-percent shooting from the floor in the opening frame.
WCU led by as many as 10 early in the second half before the Mountaineers began to chip away at the deficit. ASU never led in the second half, but Hamilton made two free throws with one second left to send the game to overtime.
ASU took a four-point lead -- its largest of the game -- on a jumper by Spagnolo at the 3:01 mark of the extra session. However, the Mountaineers were held without a field goal the rest of the way as the Catamounts closed out the contest on a 14-1 run.
The game featured 17 ties and 14 lead changes, but the Catamounts simply had more gas left in the tank late in overtime.
