Recap: Southern Miss vs. Marshall

Hattiesburg, MS (SportsNetwork.com) - Neil Watson drilled a 3-pointer in the final seconds and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles held on for a 60-57 victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd in a Conference USA thriller at Reed Green Coliseum.

Aaron Brown led four players in double figures for Southern Miss (20-3, 7-1 C- USA) with 13 points. Michael Craig added 12 points and Jerrold Brooks and Watson each had 10. The Golden Eagles have won six straight and 11 of their last 12.

Ryan Taylor led all scorers with 17 points for Marshall (8-16, 2-7), which has lost three of its last four. Kareem Canty tacked on 11 points and Chris Thomas chimed in with 10 in the loss.

Marshall led by a 35-24 score at halftime. The Thundering Herd nailed 56 percent of their shots from the floor, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range, in the first half. The Golden Eagles only had eight field goals in the period.

Southern Miss came roaring back after intermission, sinking 64.7 percent of their field goal tries, compared to 33.3 percent from Marshall. The Golden Eagles took their first lead since they were up 3-2 in the early going, when Watson calmly nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the arc after a timeout. The Thundering Herd had three seconds to respond, but they turned the ball over and Brown sank a pair of free-throws to account for the final score.

The Golden Eagles' 19-9 scoring advantage off of turnovers proved to be critical in the end.
