Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Thomas van der Mars notched a double- double with 28 points and 11 rebounds as the Portland Pilots coasted to a 76-64 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos in a West Coast Conference showdown at Leavey Center.
Ryan Nicholas also tallied a double-double for Portland (13-10, 5-6 WCC), scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Kevin Bailey and Alec Wintering each scored 10 points in the win, with Wintering adding six assists. The victory ends a two-game Portland losing streak.
Jared Brownridge paced Santa Clara (10-14, 3-8) with 20 points, adding five assists to his stat line. Brandon Clark chipped in 11 points in the loss, which was the sixth in a row for the Broncos.
Portland and Santa Clara both came out on point in the first half, each netting 50 percent of their field goal tries in the frame. The Broncos took a slim 34-33 lead into the intermission after connecting on 5-of-11 from 3-point range to Portland's 1-of-4 from distance.
The second half got ugly for the Broncos, who shot just 29 percent from the floor in the period, including 0-of-11 from 3-point distance. Portland improved to 54.5 percent shooting from the field, and hit 18-of-22 from the free-throw line.
The Pilots had the edge in rebounding, 35-24, and in second chance points, 12-8. The Broncos won the battle in points off turnovers, 15-9.
